As you may have seen in the press, it has been an incredibly busy few weeks for everyone at the Macari Centre.
The ‘pod’ accommodation is now up and running with people now staying at the warehouse site in Hanley.
We’d like to extend our thanks to Council Leader Abi Brown and all the team at Stoke-on-Trent City Council who have supported us throughout and their hard work to make the new accommodation possible – this could, quite literally, prove to be a life saver for the homeless people we are housing.
There are also a few other companies we’d like to give a special mention to including Arch Leisure (www.archleisure.co.uk) who supplied the brilliant accommodation pods.
From Fife in Scotland, we were contacted by duvet manufacturers Dusal (www.dusal.co.uk) who had heard about the Macari Centre and have been very generous in making and donating 75 lovely new hotel-quality duvets.
Closer to home, Stoke’s Steelite International (www.steelite.com) have donated 70 beautiful new mugs for our guests to use, another great addition to our inventory.
Our move into the new location is a big step towards our goal of accommodating guests in individual rooms rather than in the dormitories we have used previously. By having their own space, guests can start regaining a degree of independence and responsibility to ensure their room is kept clean, hygienic and well maintained.
It is also a ‘safe space’ where guests can take time out by themselves if they feel they need.
We were delighted to welcome Jo Gideon, MP for Stoke Central, to our new facility and thank her for her interest and continued support for the Macari Foundation and the work we do.
We have set ourselves an objective of this being a fresh start for us all and would like the new premises to be furnished where possible with new household items. With this in mind, we have compiled a ‘wish list’ of items that we need:
- 40 x Single Bed Frames
- 40 x Single Bed Mattresses
- 50 x Waterproof Mattress Protectors
- 50 x Towel Bales (Bath Towel, Hand Towel and Face Cloth)
- 50 x Single Fitted Sheets
- 50 x Single Duvet Covers and Pillowcases
- 50 x Pillows
- 50 x Bedside Lamps
- Dinner Plates, Side Plates and Bowls
- Drinking Glasses
- Cooking Utensils
- Large Cooking Pots and Pans
Lou says: “We are eternally grateful for the generosity towards the Macari Centre from people and businesses over recent years. We’ve never needed to put out a plea for donations but the move to the new site has incurred quite a lot of expense and we do now find ourselves in a position where we are asking if anyone can help with a number of household items. If you can help, then we’d love to hear from you.”
We do have a small budget to pay for some of the larger items, but we are currently struggling to source items such as single bed frames and new mattresses, and we would welcome contact from any business who may be able to supply these items.
